Keer Tanchak

[Website] >>

Keer Tanchak’s current fascination revolves around the idea of reflection: as both a pictorial device and a self-reflective state. Figures bathe in clear ponds, gaze in the mirror, or lose themselves in deep thought.  Above all they are absorbed in the act of looking at themselves, essentially serving as their own viewers, and leaving them unaware of their status as subjects. This drama of absorption is playfully mirrored by the actual reflective surfaces of the aluminum sheets upon which Tanchak paints.  The materiality of the aluminum is emphasized by techniques of masking, burnishing and glazing.  Alternately obscured and revelatory, the aluminum deepens the mystery and ambiguity of the idea of reflection.

A 2003 MFA graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Tanchak completed her BFA at Concordia University in Montreal in 2000.  She has exhibited in London, Montreal, Tampa, Chicago, Toronto and San Antonio.
