For the past 18 years John F. Marok has been living in Wakefield, Quebec where he maintains his studio and full-time art practice. A single father of three daughters and two dogs, he spends most of his time being devoted to his daughters and walking his dogs and, when they are bored with him, he paints. Which, as it turns out, is most of the time.
John F. Marok studied studio arts at John Abbott College, Concordia University and York University. He has been awarded grants by the Canada Council for the Arts and Quebec’s ministère de la Culture, and has painted and completed research residencies in Europe. He has exhibited his work for over 25 years.
This is what John F. Marok says about his paintings:
"My paintings are a reflection of my life…I start out with one thing in mind and end up with something else entirely. However, I am an explorer at heart so this is an exhilarating experience. The meaning of what I make is ambiguous – both vague and precise. Usually, when I have completed a painting it feels alternately mysterious and familiar, not unlike meeting a stranger I feel I have met before - a sense of recognition in the midst of the unknown.”
